A Modest Proposal for a New Act
Thu Jun 26, 2008 at 12:10:57 PM PDT
FISA is supposed to protect the United States against enemies foreign, but I'm told that an oath some Americans swear is to protect the country against enemies foreign and domestic. One must acknowledge that one potential avenue for enemies to attack the US is through members of Congress and other government officials. Oh, it might be bribery or blackmail, or even sympathy for the enemy, but whatever the cause, one must be on guard against this potential danger.
But what to do? Clearly you can't depend on the FBI. They might have been corrupted as well, or perhaps ordered off the case by the very evildoer. Taking a cue from FISA, therefore, allow me to propose something you Americans might want to consider...
Improper Titles and FISA

Now, I may be Canadian but if y'all are willing to listen to some advice, I can tell you that you've got a problem with managing public perception when it comes to the FISA thing.
See, you didn't give it a proper name.
Remember the "Paris Hilton Welfare Act"? Now that was snappy and told the reader everything they wanted to know. But the one I've seen tossed around here, the "Protect AT&T Act", it just doesn't have that snap. After all, what's wrong with protecting a good American company? No, what you need are some better titles, and after the cut, here are some suggestions.
Anyone Up for Putting Their Reputation Where Their Mouth Is?

So, with all the back and forth about "It was fixed" "No it wasn't!" "The polls! The polls!", there seems to be some movement to recount ballots in New Hampshire. Small state, fairly easily doable.
Let's suppose it happens. So here's the deal: are all of those currently screaming about election fixing willing to publicly admit they were wrong if a recount happens...and the original results are right?
That also works in reverse, of course.
We're Watching You

Oh, you might pay lip service to the concept, but really, admit it, you really don't think about it too much. We're the people that you overlook. And to be fair for a lot of things there's no particular reason to pay that much attention to us. But we're there. And we're watching you.
The Canadian Bomb Plot: Conspiracy Ho!
Tue Jun 06, 2006 at 03:17:24 PM PDT
So the diaries have already started making noise about the arrests being a ploy to pump up Harper's poll ratings, or done at the behest of the US government...or something. That the whole thing sounds too ridiculous to possibly be real.
Well, some data that people should consider after the flip.
US vs Canada: One continent, two news media
Fri Jan 27, 2006 at 03:29:41 PM PDT
A story came up on CBC.ca today that, I think, shows the difference between the media in Canada and the US.
http://www.cbc.ca/...
Now the important part of this story isn't the story, it's how the story is written. Notice that there's no "quest for objectivity" by seeking someone to argue the point: the writer does it.
